Docs/Get Started

Your first lead

Add your domain, install the snippet, verify it, and see where the lead appears.

From a new account to the first lead is four steps, and each has its own page in these docs. This page is the route through them.

  1. 1
Add your website. Open Tracking, then Tracking Script, and click Add Domain. Your domain gets its own tracking key. See Add a domain.
  2. 2
Install the snippet.Paste it into your site's head, add it through Google Tag Manager, or load it from your app. See Install the snippet and, for your platform, Install on your platform.
  3. 3
Check that it works. Open your site once, then click Verify installation. See Check that it works.
  4. 4
Send yourself a lead. Fill in a form on your site with a real email or phone number. To keep your test out of your numbers, first open your browser console on the page, run _lwTest(true) and reload the page before you submit; when you are done, run _lwTest(false) and reload again. The switch is read when the page loads, so a submission is recorded with whatever the switch was when the page loaded, not with what you set since.

Where the lead shows up

A real submission appears in four places:

  • On Leads, at the top of the list, newest first.
  • In the bell at the top right, as a New form lead entry that opens the lead.
  • Under Recent activity on the Dashboard.
  • In Slack or at your own webhook, once you connect one under Integrations.

A submission sent in test mode is hidden from Leads and from Recent activity, and left out of the lead counts, so a working installation can look as if nothing arrived. It does ring the bell, and it is sent to Slack or your webhook: click the bell entry and the lead opens on its own page. To see it in the list, open All filters on Leads and turn on Show test leads. It is also listed, for good, under the customer record it created on Contacts.

Nothing arrived? A submission that looked automated, or that came with no email or phone, waits under Tracking, Held Submissions with the reason, and a suspected bot can be recovered from there. A form built in an unusual way may need a small change; see Building forms we track accurately.

Then bring in the rest

Calls and chats become leads too: get a tracking number under Tracking, Call Tracking, and connect your chat widget under Integrations. Invite your teammates under Settings, Team so they can work the leads with you. See Call tracking, Live chat leads and Invitations.
