User Journey
How the path diagram is built: visits, steps, Other pages and Drop-off.
User Journey, on Analytics, draws the most common paths visitors take through your site as flows from left to right. Its own caption: The most common paths visitors take through your site. Hover any flow for the full path and its share.
How it is built
- The unit is a visit: one visitor's pageviews with no gap longer than 30 minutes. A visit that saw a single page is not drawn.
- Choose 3 or 5 steps at the top right. Consecutive views of the same page count as one step, and a path stops just before it returns to a page it already showed.
- The diagram starts from the 3 most common entry pages, so visits that started elsewhere are not drawn.
- From each page, the 3 most common next pages are drawn. Everything else goes to Other pages, and visits that ended there go to Drop-off, so every visit that reached a page is accounted for.
The diagram follows the range and the site but not your click filters or the visit-count filter. When it cannot be drawn you see one of two messages: Not enough multi-page sessions yet to map a journey, when no visit qualifies; or This range is too large to map right now. Try a shorter period, when the period is too heavy to compute.
